[Ham-Computers] Local Ham with computer troubles...

When I bought this new computer (quad core running Win-7 64 bit) none of
my old DOS (16 bit) programs would run on it, and still don't. That's
because the 64bit OS doesn't have a 16 bit kernal.

My suggestion is that he either go with the 32bit OS, or scrap the old
16 bit programs, OR have a second machine that DOES run the 32bit system
just for the 16 bit programs. In my case I have as duo-core laptop as
an emergency 'spare' computer. It had the 64bit OS installed when I got
it, but when I loaded the Win-7 system I switched to the 32bit OS. As
that computer only has 4GB of RAM anyway, I didn't lose all that much
RAM. On the rare occasions I need the older programs, mostly electronic
design programs, I pull the "backup" machine off the shelf and use it. . .

I understand that there may be some virtual programs that allow 16 bit
programs to run but haven't tried them, and I may be wrong, but I DON'T
think that running the "virtual XP" mode will do it as I think it loads
the 64bit version of XP. . .
