The best way to partition any drive for Linux is a swap partition of at
least 512mb.
At least a 4gb root drive ( / ) and the balance for /home.
This make upgrading by complete re-install easier, especially with the
way most distros like to upgrade.
Here is my procedure when I upgrade my linux distro (Ubuntu).
Input the newly burnt CD into the drive, then boot the computer with
said CD.
Then I partition my drive and only re-format the / partition and tell
the partition manager the filesystem on my /home partition but do NOT
format.
Of course this means you choose manual partition when you come to that
prompt in the steps.
What this does is when you reboot your system into the newly installed
distro whatever your settings and such were have all been put back as
they were without having to go through and setup all over again.
These are my recommendations.
YMMV
