Paul,

OK. That worked eventually. It was just different enough from the similar
operation in W2K that I didn't recognize what to do. I say eventually
because I forgot at the first attempt that I had gotten disgusted when I did the
recent OS install and couldn't get it to just go ahead and boot to
Administrator that I had finally given up and entered Robert as the user name but
didn't enter any password. So when I set the default boot user and absent
mindedly entered my standard machine PW, it wouldn't boot past the user select
screen until I just hit the Enter key (blank PW).

So now it boots without user intervention. Except that it still boots to
Robert, which I never liked. But I'm not going to repeat the past three
weeks just to get rid of it.

I'll add, on the off chance of anyone else later having a similar problem
and coming across this thread in a search (I've had stranger things happen
long after the fact), that once you've done this, should you need to add, edit
or delete a user you'll have to first click the box (turn back on)
requiring users to enter user name and PW, do whatever it is you need to do, then
click (select) the default boot user and unclick (turn off) the user name and
PW requirement and enter the PW for the default user. This was the same way
in NT 5 and W2K.
