Thanks for the replies. This looks like a Catch 22. I can't delete the
2nd user, as Scan to File is a critical ap here. And the Microsoft KB seemed
to be written with the assumption that there was only one user account set
up. In Windows 2000, during installation there was a place where you could
select or say to log in a user (with me it was always Administrator)
automatically at boot time. I presume there may have been a place where you could
later change that but I never had any reason to want to. And adding the user
account for the scanner I know didn't change it because over the years I
went through that step several times.
I guess I'll ask the Xerox guy tomorrow. Maybe he's run into it and knows
that it can or cannot be fixed. As Mike commented, the last option in the
KB article (that does not use regedit) does not mention anything about a user
name so how would it know which to use?
