[Ham-Computers] FTP Operations Between XP Workstations

Group,

We have a Xerox WC5638 that I use among other things for scanning and
printing the vintage military radio manuals that I've supplied for many years.

Since its distant predecessor back in 1999, the Xerox machine has used
TCP/IP and FTP to access and write to the hard drive file storage location on
one of our machines. Recently I had to reinstall the OS on the file storage
machine. One of the last steps was to set up the scan to file again. I
installed IIS (Internet Information Services) on the workstation following
instructions (it has been several years since I last did it) from Xerox
downloaded the last time I had to do it. I set up a user (named WC5638) for the
scanner to use. And I successfully performed the test on the workstation where,
from the local computer keyboard and a CMD window, you type FTP and the
local IP address and log into the machine. Then change directories to the
storage folder and create and then delete a test folder. That all worked. I
then checked the setup at the Xerox end although no changes should have been
necessary (none were) as the name, password and destination IP address
remained the same as before. But when I tried to scan a test sheet, the Xerox
machine couldn't write it to the storage harddrive.

I called Xerox and the short story is that after nearly three hours with an
English speaking tech in Dallas (instead of Bangalore) it still doesn't
work. He thinks, in part because the attempt to log in to the storage computer
and write the file takes a looong time to fail, that something has happened
at the 5638 end. And someone should be here Monday to reinstall the
software on it.

However, my XP laptop, which I used the week I was reinstalling everything
on the main machine, is still sitting just to my right and already had IIS
installed. So I tried to use it to test the connection. But unlike on the
local machine, when I (on the remote/laptop) go to a CMD window and type FTP <
IP Address> or other combinations like FTP -A <IP Address>, etc., the next
line below where I typed says Connected to <IP Address> but instead of two
lines below that being prompted to enter a User name, I get a blinking cursor
for several seconds then the message "Connection closed by remote host."

So... if anyone here knows how this is supposed to work, I'd appreciate
comments.
