Jim, if you are running Gnome Ubuntu, then on the panel bar click;
System-->Preferences-->Removable Drivers and Media. Under the storage tab
make sure that the first 3 options are selected. These should pertain
to mounting
removable drives and storage, along with launching Nautilus to browse the drive.
Also, you should see other tabs for multimedia and such. You may want
to browse these and see what you can do with them.
