HAL is Hardware Abstract Layer

You need to go into Terminal and enter
sudo dpkg -l grep hal

hit the enter key after typing in this data

Then it will ask for your password
type in your password & hit enter

It will show you some info. Write that down and post it here to see if 
the guys can help.

It can take a few weeks but you should catch on and be more comfortable 
doing things in Linux. Don't give up, it's just a learning process that 
will have huge rewards once you get up to speed with it. Most everything 
has a learning curve to it, this is just another one of those things. 
You'll look back at it next year and laugh at the simple stuff...hi hi
