I don't know the whole story but have you checked the bios to make sure 
the drives are detected properly?  Also check the Dell website, where 
you can get all the necessary drivers.  Lastly, download the latest BIOS 
update from Dell, which tends to help.

If you have any kind of live OS cd, you can boot to it and see if it 
recognizes the drives and will write to them.  You can use almost any 
version of linux (Knoppix is really good for troubleshooting) or 
Ultimate Boot CD, which comes in Windows flavors too.
