Hi Gene,

I looked at, but haven't used any of the Sans Digital equipment yet. For two drives, I've been considering this:

http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/277

Holds 2 SATA drives and can be run in JBOD, RAID-0 and RAID-1 modes. Interfaces to PC via USB or eSATA, so you can use USB for now and, if you ever find a compatible (e)SATA controller, you can utilize the faster eSATA port. Averages $100. There are other "MX" versions also available, such as with FireWire, or USB-Only - go "up" one level on the linked page to see the other available enclosures. The "MX" series are the 2 drive enclosures.

I've used many other Vantec products and they're pretty good. Not perfect, but better than many others.

BTW, I believe the Sans Digital unit you're considering also comes in a flavor with USB 2.0 *and* eSATA. If the cost difference is small, it might be better to get the one with eSATA for future bandwidth expansion.

Subject: The SATA saga continued. . . .

I have been trying for about a month now to get my two new Maxtor 500 GB drives installed in a computer and have had no success up to this point.

I tried the Silicon Image SBT-SRD2 (TWO of them ~ both bad) with no luck. The first one was defective out of the box and the second one would only work with one drive attached.

Now, I am looking at a Sans Digital MS2U+, which is a external enclosure for two SATA drives and it uses a USB interface.

My question: Has anyone used a similar device (SATA to USB) and what was their experience?

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated!
