Thanks!
I did have two different brands of ram in there for at
least a couple of years - now this one is behaving badly.
More of the story ...
Bad RAM interacting with a full HDD and perhaps confusing
the IDE I/O - appears to be the cause of trashing the
Superblock on my HDD.
The process of trying to recover the HDD - not knowing
that the RAM and I/O were variables - resulted in loss of
the partition information, rendering the HDD inaccessible.
I have installed another HDD and will buy a matched set
of RAM, probably two 512's instead of two 256's.
Meanwhile I am hoping that one of the discount data
recovery companies is legitimate because there are some
irreplaceable family pictures on that HDD and the budget
doesn't allow for $1,000+ but I may be able to sell some
radio stuff and raie $300.
Anyone familiar with these two companies - or could you
recommend a reasonably priced trustworthy alternative?
