Ken,
Replacing the DVD drive is a snap. DVD burner drives cost about $30 and you'll probably need a Parallel ATA (PATA, aka IDE) model. Usually just a matter of removing 4 screws, unplugging the data and power cables, plugging in the new drive, plug in cables, and re-inserting screws.
Complete documentation for the Dimension 4100, including strip down and 5.25" drive replacement, can be found here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dzuul/
Would take an an average tech about 15 minutes. About an hour if you've never taken apart a computer before.
And, for better idea of the cost, here's the Newegg CD/DVD drives page:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=10&name=CD-DVD-Burners-Media
$23 for a LiteON 20x DVD burner with free shipping...can't beat that!

Hi Duane,
I am profoundly sorry because I am in no position to take you up
on your offer! My DVD drive has been out for 6 or 8 months - I
cannot even reinstall the original program that came with this Dell
Dimension 4100 confuser and I desperately need to do that!
After two long sessions on landline with Dell, he said the lazer
light in the drive is out. My attempts to communicate with
Samsung who made the drive have been unsuccessful. I think
I should throw in the towel.
No one handy in these parts available to help me.
But, good luck and hopefully others will take you up on your
kind offer. And, if I get out of this delimma then I'll again
contact you about the CD's.
Take care,
Ken N5CM
