Hi Dave,

Unfortunately, most "security" software vendors are moving towards complete "end-point" protection products that incorporate not just anti-virus, but additional responsibilities such as anti-spam, anti-spyware, and firewall roles. The additional code required plus the larger definition database results in larger footprint and slower scan times. Installing just an anti-virus app doesn't make sense anymore as spyware and spam are additional ways of compromising a computer.

If you think AVG has bloated, take a look at some competing products (such as NAV or McAfee). I personally don't like AVG 8's GUI, but v7.x's GUI wasn't much better. Performance wise though, AVG is still pretty good - some other end-point products eat a lot more CPU cycles and others just masquerade as security products, eat CPU cycles, and do jack squat other than just displaying a warning banner every 5 minutes!

Anyways, I'm looking forward to finding a security suite review that includes performance hit tables. Most reviews focus on how well the suite works, but don't take into consideration how "fat" or "slow" they might be. Hopefully, such a review will be available sometime soon.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 - Memory hog?

Has anyone else noticed that this new version of AVG Free takes up a
whole lot of memory? I noticed my RTTY program slowing down a lot just
now, so I pulled up the Task Manager, and it shows avgrsx.exe with
36,452K of memory usage. That's more than explorer.exe and svchost.exe
combined! Even worse, I can't end that process. Even with AVG
terminated, that part of it remains running, and refuses to shut down.

If this is normal for AVG, maybe I need to look into a different
anti-virus program. What seems to be the consensus of a good FREE
antivirus program? ( and yes, I know this is like asking which is
better, Ford or Chevy)

Tnx es 73
