I think you completely eradicated the problem. I also think it'll be
back in short order. My guess is that someone picked something up while
browsing. It can affect any computer used to surf, even with antivirus.
Check the archives of this group for `safe surfing'. The long and short
of it is that you have to set things up for safety. Internet Explorer
is like swiss cheese - full of security holes. It's like waving a flag
that says GIVE ME MALWARE.
If you must use IE, lock it down completely. Consider every site as
hostile - keep them in the untrusted zone. Turn off cookies,
javascript, and Flash. This alone will almost guarantee safe surfing.
Keep the OS and browser patched.
Spybot Search & Destroy has a really great feature called Tea Timer. It
monitors for any program trying to modify the registry and requests your
permission first.
Firefox and Opera both have new versions out now.
