"Those sites" material does not necessarily come from visiting "Those 
sites".  Spam/adware/malware is just that.  It doesn't tend to 
differentiate.

If you're talking about popups for no apparent reason, that can be 
something else.

so you don't have any positive indication of a virus from a scanner.. 
just the annoying popups?

dl the free Spybot Search&Destroy
you can also dl Hijack This and post the log here.

Not a particularly a good sign.
A decent portion of the time, not running or crashing is indication of 
malware.
