[Ham-Computers] sound recording

I am trying to record sound but have not been successful.
 I also run Echolink. When I try to run a "test" there is no indication that 
sound is going out of my computer.  I have the speaker pluged into the 
"Speaker" jack. BUT I do hear my voice coming oput of the speakers !!! I 
also am trying to get my cassette player to record so that I can make a CD. 
Again, not sound recorded. When I go to " sound recorder" in windows, again 
no sign of audio.
I have checked to make sure that there was no "Fire wall" problem.
 I am running Windows XP service pk2.
