  Your "refurb" system came with a Compaq OEM license, which you elected not to use.  You instead are using your XP Home retail copy.  You are legal on either OS, but can only transfer the retail OS to a new box via the reactivation key route.  The OEM XP Pro is not transferrable.  You DID get it, though - it was on the box.  The media is factory installed by Compaq, along with a CD image on the hard-disk, which you can (and should) burn to a CD-R in case you need to recover from a disk failure.  However, if you aren't using the XP Pro, there's no reason to now, since you can't transfer it.  
   
  BTW, it's not like you're out a lot on that OEM version.  Yes, the system builders do charge you for the OS they ship (passing on the costs like any business) but they pay far less than you do at retail.  That's one of the reasons that OEM OSs aren't transferrable.  Included in the retail markup is the "right to transfer"

As I mentioned in a previous post, since the new/refurbished machine I 
purchased, (refurbished in this case, meaning it was one built for a company 
who did not take all of the machines they originally ordered, so since 
Compaque could not sell it as "new" as such, it was sold as refurbished, 
even though it truly was new with a full warranty.), came with XP PRO and my 
screen reading software will not work with XP Pro, just XP Home Edition, I 
never got the copy of XP Pro that I also paid for.

Somehow this entire thing just seems not equitable.
