I'd like to second gentleman Aaron's advice.
After hundreds of XP installs alone, I can do it with my eyes closed.
You don't need to do hundreds of them - all you need to do is one:
yours. It's not terribly difficult and you'll get a `clean' system.
Make sure you have any drivers you're going to need, if they're not part
of your install package. It never hurts to have another computer
connected to the net in case you need anything in the meantime.

Lastly, be sure to download all of the Windows updates that are
available (with the exception of WGA and IE7) as well as your favorite
antivirus app.

For those of you with fairly recent computers, you can do all sorts of
interesting things with virtualization. I've mentioned VMplayer in the
past and I just got done installing KVM to a few machines. KVM works at
the hardware level so it's much faster than a regular virtual machine.
Not sure if it's available for Windows (I use linux).

The beauty of virtual machines/KVM is that you can test all sorts of
software and operating systems without disturbing your main system.
Even if you trash the test software, you just reload the machine and
you're back at square one, ready to play some more.

Enjoy!
