WinXP Pro isn't considered a "newer" version as all flavors of "XP" came out at the same time. But, "Pro" *is* a higher end of XP and attempting to install "Home" over "Pro" would be considered a "downgrade", something that Microsoft doesn't support. Here's a link to a MS KB article with the support upgrade paths for WinXP:

Subject: [Ham-Computers] XP install question
I have a friend that has a illegal copy of XP PRO on his computer (Don't ask how/why!).
I have located a XP Home disk and wonder if the Home edition can be installed on the computer that already has the XP PRO edition without loosing all the programs and settings? Or, is the PRO edition considered newer than the Home edition and won't let the Home edition install?
TIA
