[Ham-Computers] E-mail attachment problems.

I think this is the same as an issue I helped my father-in-law with.
EarthLink TA had taken over some associations. Outlook Express has a switch
to set them back. Do this:

Select Run... from the Start menu.
Type "msimn /reg" under Open.
Click OK.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312355

Should reset them all back so OE runs everything it should.

Hi Ron -- I'm the person Kurt was talking about, with the attachment
problem. He suggested I join this forum...

"Is she using WEB mail and not telling you?"

No, I only use web mail when I'm at another computer. I download my mail to
Outlook Express at home.

"Has she tried to save the file to "her" directory then open it there?"

I did try this recently. If I double-click the file from my directory, I
get the same problem. However, if I right-click, select "open with", and
then use a different program, it will open. I'm thinking the problem may
have something to do with Earthlink Total Access Mailbox, maybe... That's
their email program, which I don't use.

I've talked to Earthlink's tech support people about this. The first person
wanted to do a "remote" session with my computer, which I allowed up until
the point she started poking around in the registry. At that point I got
nervous and terminated the session, and subsequently developed numerous
problems with my computer spontaneously disconnecting from the internet over
and over again... After two days of frustration, I contacted Earthlink
again, this time about the connection problems. The first person I talked
to was unable to help me. She connected me with her supervisor, who did
solve the connection problem. I then asked him about the problem I'm having
with attachments, and he just told me that Earthlink never puts a password
on anything... So much for their tech support!

Anyway, I guess what I'll do is just save the attachments and open them with
a different program. That works, and it's easier than beating my head
against the wall trying to figure out why I keep getting a password prompt!

Thanks for your help!

Carole

If she has downloaded the mail to her computer why would she need to
enter her earthlink pass word, that makes no sense. Sounds like here
mail client is mis-configured. Is she using WEB mail and not telling you?

Which proves the file isn't password protected.

Has she tried to save the file to "her" directory
then open it there?
