Hi Jim,
Have you tried removing the item from desktop folder and then recreating?
Maybe they are like slid off the screen or maybe in the hidden mode. If you
could access the properties of the desktop file maybe that will tell you
something.

There are a number of applications seen in the Desktop folder that are not
on the actual desktop.
If I attempt to drag an icon from the folder to the actual desktop, I'm told
the source and destination files are the same. Generating a shortcut in
Start>All programs and attempting to move it doesn't work.
I think I inadvertently agreed to cleaning up desktop icons, but this option
is currently off. I also checked auto-arrange to verify that option was
not selected.
One application I'm attempting to place on the desktop is Explorer Plus, and
enhanced Windows Explorer
I'm running XP standard version on an older Dell Inspiron notebook computer.
