Hi John,
One possibility is to get personal information from you. There is a huge
market for this, legal or not, disclosures and OOPS! just seem to happen.
Remember the employee of AOL who sold the information AOL had on about one
million subscribers to a man who brokered the deal out of Las Vegas two
years ago? Naturally the broker unloaded the material within minutes of its
electronic receipt to other information brokers, AKA spam venders, around
the world!
The employee who worked for AOL was fired etc. But the damage was done! One
million subscribers, all of whom were assured of their personal information
safety and protection from theft, found out it was untrue. When it comes to
the Internet, according to 'every' professional in this field that I know,
all warn me that there is absolutely nothing on the Internet that is
'secure', 'personal', theft proof etc. A great deal of effort and money is
devoted annually to keeping the "safe" illusion intact and luring more
Internet users into the deception that on-line anything is safe.
As a Professional Magician/Illusionist I learned all sorts of private
information from just listening to seeming idle conversations. People have
no idea how much private information they tell the world. Just listen to
your work associates during lunch, while taking a break and chatting, while
in the checkout line at the grocery store etc. Then ask yourself how much of
this private information you are telling the world without even thinking
about it.
When you call the business, they have a display much like 911 does; name,
street address, city, state, zip code, phone number etc. Just by calling you
have given them private information.
There are only a few companies who actually build these products and then
the name of Emerson, or whomever, is put on it.
When you say "an upgrade", nothing you spoke about involved this upgrade.
Such as installing new data, patches etc.
Was this "fix" in the owners manual?
I am sure there are many reasons such things are done, just my thoughts on
it.
