[Ham-Computers] VHS to DVD solved

I contacted the  manufacturer of this unit and was transferred to an
'engineer' who told me all I needed was an 'upgrade'.  This turned out to be
a few numbers to be entered on the remote control.  Sure enough, the unit
now accepts 16X media for recording purposes!

It appears that both Sylvania and Emerson DVRs have this 'upgrade' feature,
and Magnavox may have it.  Can anyone tell me why the units would be set up
this way (requiring a call to the manufacturer to get the 'upgrade')?
