Hi All,
I'm in the process of setting up a 10M Beacon that will operate 24/7. This
is built around a scrapped 40 Channel CB transceiver and is "keyed" by my
old NEC Pentium laptop running Lyle Koelor's very nice DOS IDer program.
Except for some fine tweaking of the final stage (waiting on a heavier final
transistor) the transmitter is completely finished, complete with an
internal opto-coupler interface to the RS-232 port of the computer.
Tests presently being run indicates that everything is working well. The
NEC is running on Win-95 (not sure if version A or B). However, I've found
that I had to disable all power saving in the OS or keying speeds change
drastically and erratically as well as sending extraneous stuff when the
power control does it's stuff. Since the installation is planned to run
24/7, 52 weeks a year it seems a shame to have the HDD running all that
time, especially since the keying program is DOS. I figure I can pull the
hard drive (it slides in), boot DOS from a floppy, then run the program from
a floppy (it's small enough).
I While I USED to be VERY proficient in DOS, it's been many years. Refresh
my memory. Is all I need to do to run a DOS program this way is create a
Bootable DOS diskette, put my program on it? Then boot from that disk and
have an autoexec.bat file to auto-magically start the keying program. Or
does the autoexec file also need other commands embedded? (They say one's
memory is the first to go 8^)
