Rolly,

What version (and edition) of Nero did you install (e.g. v6 Ultra)? Depending on what you selected in the installation options, Nero may have installed a media player and reassociated various audio and video file extensions to play with that media player.

As Loren mentioned in a previous post, check your "file type" settings and see what is currently handling .WMV files. This will tell you what *should* be starting when you double-click on a .WMV file. It's possible that Nero's player won't work with Outlook attachments, but that would be highly odd as Outlook just uses the standard Windows file associations.

If you want to reassociate Windows Media Player (WMP) with "media files", do this: Open WMP and then click on "Tools" -> "Options". Click on the "File Types" tab and then place a checkmark on all the filetypes you want WMP to handle. Then click "OK". Now try opening the attachment from Outlook.

If you want Nero to handle the file, then start the appropriate Nero app and check the options/preferences within that app - you'll most likely find an options page similiar to the WMP tab that allows you to check/uncheck various file extensions.

For reference, many programs want to be the "default" program for various file formats. For instance, if you now install Roxio's Easy Media Creator, it will "take over" all media formats. Often, when installing the app, there's an option to "associate" the filetypes. I generally uncheck everything as I like to use the apps I've previously setup to handle media objects (Media Player Classic for audio/video and IrfanView for pics/graphics). Just something to keep in mind.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] WMV files

I recently installed Nero 7 on my XP machine. Since then when I receive a file with a .wmv file extension, I cannot play that file from my outlook express email program. I get the error message ::

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

When I go look in the folder options of the control panel, "Nero 7" is referenced there.

If I save the file to the hard drive, and then click on it, it opens and plays properly in Nero 7.

I would appreciate if someone can tell me why this occurs and what I can do to fix it.

Thanks in advance.
