[Ham-Computers] RE: Flakey Favorites.

It sounds like your PC is still set to check for a "network" connection
and dial if a connection isn't available. Go to the "Internet Options"
Control Panel (in Windows or Internet Explorer, same thing) and click on
the "Connections" tab. You should see a list of your old dial-up
connections and some other settings. Make sure the "Never dial a
connection" radio box is ticked and Windows should never prompt you
again. If you're sure you'll never use the listed dial-up connections
again, you can delete them.

General cause of this is that the DSL connection is either down or is
taking longer than normal to "connect". Contrary to popular belief,
most DSL connections aren't "always on" - they use something called
"PPPoE" which is basically "dial-up" over Ethernet. But, they connect
much faster than dial-up - typically a second or two. It's possible
that your PC is "timing out" while waiting for the connection and thinks
that no "LAN" connection is available - therefore, it asks if you want
to try a dial-up connection.

If you get this often, it's more likely a DSL sync problem and you'll
need to check your DSL modem's (or router's) diagnostic log to see if
there are any line problems (look for CRC errors or sync drops). The
modem/router might have an option to "Keep alive", meaning it will
attempt to never drop the connection by sending "keep alive" packets to
your ISP. If it does, enable it. This, in essence, makes the
connection "always on", but ISP's can force a disconnect (and generally
do, but not very often).

Subject: [Ham-Computers] Flakey Favorites.

A friend recently sent me the following e-mail, any ideas?

This is not a huge issue but has happened 3 or 4 times since I switched
to DSL. For some reason, a few times when I've clicked on an address in
my favorites list, my computer will try to use the old dial-up
connection, which of course won't work. A little window pops up with
the options to "connect" or "cancel"; if I click "connect" it tries to
use the dial-up modem. If I click "cancel" all the addresses on my
favorites list are greyed out and inactive. I can get around it by
re-opening Explorer, but it 's somewhat annoying. Is there anything I
can do to make it stop?

Kurt
