[Ham-Computers] burning dvds

I am sure that I am not only one making movie and data dvds.

I am using Nero 6 to do both.

So far I have only used the '4.7'gig blanks.

I can get five half hour tv episodes on one 4.7gig blank
without sacrificing quality.

Each half hour episode is captured to a 350meg mpeg2 file. I
am using a PVR-250 video capture card. The card has an
on-board mpeg2 encoder chip. I can get nearly 12 of those
350meg mpeg2 files onto the 4.7gig blank if I burn them as
data but only five if I go for DVD movies.

Also, it takes about 3hours worth of data crunching on the
five mpeg2 files before the DVD movie disk is actually
burned. During that time, Nero claims to be transcoding,
whatever that means.

I thought DVD movies were mpeg2 format. Can anyone clarify
what is going on? Does my description of my experience
indicate I am doing something wrong. The DVDs I make do
work in several plain DVD players, and the mpegs run fine on
several different computers even without transcodeing.

Regards,
Frank Kamp
