The "unknown network controller" is now being listed under Network 
Adadpters as; "Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection"

Thanks to all who responded, but especially to Aaron who came up with 
the solution and more importantly, the location of the driver install 
program that I didn't know I needed.
