May not be exactly the same in Home Edition, but in XP Pro, you would do the following:

* Open the Control Panel -> Network Connections

* On the left hand side under "Network Tasks", click on the "Create a new connection" link.

* In the New Connection Wizard, click "Next"

* "Connect to the Internet" <NEXT>

* "Setup my connection manually" <NEXT>

* "Connect using a dial-up modem" <NEXT>

* Select your modem <NEXT>

* Give the connect a name - it can be anything you want. <NEXT>

* Enter the dial-up number (or leave blank) <NEXT>

* Specify if other login ID's can also use this connection <NEXT>

* Enter your ISP's login information - if you leave these fields blank, Windows will prompt you when you click on the connection. Tick or untick the option boxes - I suggest you untick the "make this the default connection" box if dial-up is not your default connection. <NEXT>

* Tick the "Add desktop shortcut" if you want an icon for this connection on the desktop. Otherwise, it will only be available in the Network Connections control panel. <FINISH>

At this point, the dial-up connection panel will open and you can test the connection. If you left any fields blank in the setup, then they'll be blank here. If you tick the "Save password" box, then whatever password you enter will be saved and you won't need to re-type it the next time you start the connection. Also tick this box if your password changed and you need to save the new password.

There's also a "Properties" button if you need to customize any specific settings.

73 and Merry Christmas,

Subject: [Ham-Computers] XP and Dial-Up Networking

In many places, including but not limited to hotels and motels, dial-up service is the only way to connect. Slow, yes, but maybe better than nothing. Then to, many hotels and motels are returning to wire connections for many reasons.

In Win98SE, and likely W95B before, you did a setup from My Computer by a dclick to Dial-Up Networking. In that window you saw "Make a New Connection" and by a dclick proceeded with the appropriate data entry, finally ending with an entry name. A rclick to the entry name enable the creating of a shortcut on the Desktop.

What is the easiet and shortest way to do the same thing in XP-Home?
