the first thing would be to get into the existing router and make a note
of all the settings.  This can only help. 

If you don't have the manual, go to the D-Link website and they'll have
it or a tutorial.  You get into the router via your browser.

Wireless routers should never be used as-is from the box.  You need to
enable the security features.  Most routers are pretty detailed about
how to set them up or have decent help functions.

If all else fails, ask questions.
