Ahhhh! I now see the light. You did an "in-place" motherboard upgrade
without re-installing Win98. That explains a lot!

In these situations, I generally advise to remove a hardware key from
the registry so that Win98 redetects all of the devices properly. MS
will inform you that they don't support in-place motherboard upgrades,
but the PnP in Win98 works quite well. There are a couple of files
built from the specs on the original motherboard that can't be replaced
(IIRC, "VMM32.DLL") and it will cause the system to not run 100%
optimally, but it's not a big concern.

Another option is to boot into "Safe Mode" and to delete *EVERYTHING* in
the device manager, then reboot. However, the danger in this is that it
doesn't always work. The registry key removal generally works and
there's another Win98 registry key to set in order to force Win98 to
re-run a PnP detection. If I remember what the key is, I'll let you
know.

BTW, for the defrag error, try booting to "Command Prompt Safe Mode" and
running "CHKDSK". If it reports errors, then run "CHKDSK /f" to have
CHKDSK "fix" the errors. As always, before running CHKDSK or SCANDISK,
always have a system backup as either can potentially "hose" a system.

Aaron,

Im using Windows 98SE. Thanks for the info. I probably installed the
Biostar
drivers when I installed the motherboard I took out. My PC Chips
motherboard
I have now works great. I just wish I knew why Defrag says I have errors
on
drive so run scandisk when scandisk says drive is ok.
