[Ham-Computers] RE: Question ABOUT JAVA

In IE 6.0, Microsoft's version of Java, now called the "Microsoft Java
Virtual Machine" (aka MSVM or MSJVM), is embedded and you don't need to
do anything to "turn it on". However, when Sun won their Java suit
against MS, I believe MS removed MSVM from the IE installer - but,
systems with MSJVM installed were allowed to keep it. For example, MSVM
shipped with WinXP (and WinXP SP1), but it's not included with WinXP
SP2. If you installed the SP2 update to an older version of WinXP, then
MSVM *is* available. In other words, MSJVM is available on systems with
WinXP, XP SP1, or either updated to XP SP2 - it is not available on
WinXP SP2 installed from scratch.
You can find out what version of MSVM is installed by typing "JVIEW" at
a Command Prompt. If MSVM is available, then it should respond with a
version and help info. If you get an error, then MSVM is *not*
installed.
Yes, there are compatibility issues with MSVM and the "real" Sun Java.
In much the same respect, there are websites that won't render properly
in browsers other then IE due to the use of IE specific functions
(especially ActiveX controls). However, there are also compatibility
issues with the different flavors of Sun Java too - some apps written
for Java 1.3 won't work with v1.4 or 1.5. Some don't even work within
"sub" versions (such as 1.42_03 vs 1.42_06), but this is minor in
comparison. I put the primary blame for most Java compatibilty issues
on Microsoft as they try to make everything proprietary - e.g. force
people to use IE by coercing webdesigners to code in IE specific
webtools such as FrontPage. Then pretty them up using ActiveX - problem
is, only IE can run ActiveX components! Note to webdesigners: if you
want your webpages to work for *everybody*, don't use FrontPage.
Anyways, if you download and install the Sun Java (J2RE v1.4x or v1.5),
then there's an option when you install it to integrate with whatever
browser you're currently using. If you want to change that option, then
you can use the Java Control Panel (in the standard Control Panels) and
check/uncheck the integration option. If you have the MSJVM installed,
then MSJVM will be used if Sun Java integration is disabled/unchecked.

Hi Folks!
I'm running IE 6.0 and can't figure how to turn on Java.
I went to the Internet Options on the Control Panel and couldn't find
anything related to Java. I want to be able to see the APRS-IS maps
which are done in Java. 73, Gordon Beattie,W2TTT 201.314.6964

Turn off EVERYTHING running on your comuter except explorer and systray,
I bet it'll run then. I ran into this problem and suffered for over a
year until I turned off the bare minimum to run the computer then defrag
started right away.
