Also look at Linux for the blind - blinux.
There are varying degrees of visual problems - is the person totally
blind (rare) or have some residual vision, in which case an application
that magnifies part of the screen may be of use. In linux there's xmag,
don't know abot the first and third most popular operating systems though.
