I am using Linspire on my desktop and love it. It is close enough in
look and feel to Windows that its an easy transition. BUT, I bought
mine with the comoputer, already installed. Wal Mart now sells
computers with Linspire installed including a lap top. You can go to
Linspire.com and thsy will be able to tell you if it will run on your
older computer. You can het "free" downloads of several of the Linux
versions that are limited in some way, sometimes in time, and that way
you can test them to see if they work before laying out cash for a
full version.
