you could also run linux in command line mode and surf with lynx, the
text-only browser.
I opt for something in the middle: I use Opera as my default browser,
with cookies and javascript turned OFF. I use Firefox when I have no
choice about javascript and cookies, but the security is still jacked up
as high as I can. Both work on Win, linux, and Mac (I think). Opera is
major amounts faster than any other browser I've tried.
You can not accept 3rd party cookies too, as well as tweaking settings
in your firewall (you DO use a firewall, right? www.zonelabs.com - it's
free). The most recent version of Norton AV also has browsing safety
features.
It's really difficult to get a virus or spyware without cookies and
javascript.
Some browsers will allow you to accpet cookies on a site-by-site basis,
which might be your best bet.

IE should be incinerated.
It's the perfect swiss-cheese browser for its operating system :)
