Hi Robert.

The major difference is the frequency of the laser used to do the
record/playback.  I don't know the exact wavelengths, just that they
are different.  Also, as Aaron mentioned, the -R is used primarily
with the set-top DVD players and the +R is used primarily with
computers.

There is also the double/dual layer format, and I believe you will
usually find a "DL" somewhere in the format as well.

If you burn DVDs intended for set-top players, to be played back on
your TV, your should probably use the DVD-R format.  Most of the
recent set-top players should be able to play the DVD+R format as
well, but I haven't had a great deal of luck with it.  So, as
Aaron said, you might be best to use DVD-R for everything.
