thanks for all the good inputs however so far no joy
what I am going to do is put the 30 gig back in the master position and
put another windows folder on it
(this has worked for me before)
then I will save the information I need off the drive on cd/dvd reformat
(twice) or use shredder
then put it to pasture and get another drive for back up

again appreciate all the help and I learned something
