[Ham-Computers] RE: internet connection

Who is your ISP? Based on the fact that e-mail works, I would think that
your ISP is experiencing a problem with their gateway (or proxy) to the
'net. The mail servers are "local" to you as you are on their network, so
that would explain why e-mail is still working. If anything "beyond" their
network such as AIM, websites not on their domain, etc., is in inaccessable,
it sounds like a gateway problem. Why would mail going to the internet
work? Because mail is often configured on dedicated gateways to the 'net
and not shared with gateways handling other traffic (such as port 80 traffic
(web)).

If you can connect to your wife's computer without a problem, then it
doesn't sound like a networking problem with your PC. Is your wife's PC
experiencing he same issue(s)? You didn't mention if you're sharing your
cable connection (with a gateway/router). If so, then try resetting the
router. While you're at it, also reset the cablemodem. Reset both by
unplugging power for about 10 seconds - don't use the RESET button(s) unless
you know for a fact that it won't also reset the saved configurations.

Jeff mentioned un-installing and re-installing TCP/IP. This is often a good
idea, but unfortunately, WinXP doesn't allow you to un-install TCP/IP.
However, there is a way to reset the TCP/IP stack using the command prompt.
This is best saved as a last resort as the TCP/IP stack doesn't often get
corrupted. Spyware is the typical culprit when the IP stack is corrupted,
so it's best to scan for and remove any spyware before resetting the IP
stack. Otherwise, it'll just get corrupted again. If you wish to reset the
IP stack, let me know and I'll post the procedure.
