Hi Brian,

I have seen this problem many, many times and have to inform you that
you should not go and purchase a new drive ....yet.

First off, BEFORE running scandisk or defrag turn off your screen
saver and unplug from the internet, disable any antivirus programs!!
In older machines defrag will not run until the disk has been
pronounced clean or errors by scandisk.

1) Always run the scandisk first.
2) Open its options and make sure that it repairs errors found etc.
Sorry I cannot remember the other options.
3) Let it complete even if you have to OK a couple of times on the
message of ' Scandisk has restarted 10 tens etc...'. The problem it
encountered was that the screensaver or possibly another program
accessed the harddisk messing up the order of the information that had
already been checked.

Perhaps it is trying to do something it is not supposed to do ie move
unchecked blocks of data as scandisk has not pronounced them 'clean'?
1) Let it run and run and run until 100% ie coffee and lunch/evening
    sleep time.

This is of little help if the disk was working before although the Free
space might be too little to copy files into when running defrag.

No it would NOT help the scandisk and defrag problem. However if this
machines connects to the internet I would would suggest getting an up to
date virus scanner ie not a Norton's you had and have never used from
2001, Get the 2004 version.

Hope it helps
