Yes, it's very common to find corrupted "pressed" CD's. I manage one of the
Microsoft "Select" libraries here at work (several dozen update CD's per
month) and run into corrupted CD's every so often.
Another possibility is a dirty CD-ROM lens or a failing CD-ROM drive. Have
you tried using a different CD-ROM drive?
Another option (copy to HD)...boot from a floppy disk that has DOS CD-ROM
support (e-mail me if you need details). Then create a directory named
"WIN98" on the C:\ drive. Copy all of the files in the "WIN98" directory on
the Win98 CD-ROM to the C:\WIN98 directory (don't worry about
sub-directories). If you run into problems during the copying process, then
the CD or CD-ROM drive is suspect (see above). If the files copy
successfully, then eject the Win98 CD and run the SETUP program from
C:\WIN98 - the install should run directly from the HD.
If you think the CD is corrupted, then try this. If you have access to a
CD-R/RW drive, try making a backup copy of the CD. Make sure to use the
CD-R/RW drive as both the source and target (CD-R/RW drives are usually more
tolerant of flaws on CD's). Then use the backup to install Win98 (or do the
"copy to HD", then install).
You can also make a CD with just the files in the WIN98 folder on the Win98
CD, but this CD would not be bootable. Many CD writing programs give you an
option to make the CD bootable, but they either need a working boot floppy
with DOS CD-ROM support, or they create a boot CD without the ability to
read the CD (long story). If you create a CD with just the WIN98 folder,
then you can boot from a floppy and do the "copy to HD" install.
Good luck and let me know if you have any further Q's!

Is it possible for the CD to have corrupted? I've
never had that happen before. The CD surface looks
just fine. Should I consider getting another
distribution CD?
