When I bought my wife a computer about three years ago (so that I could have
mine back), I got it from Gateway and let the salesman talk me into accepting
it with XP Home on it instead of W2K, which was what was on the other two
machines on our LAN. I had various issues between it and the other two. First
was, of course, that some things had to be done differently so it was just two
slightly different OS's to have to keep up with. Second was that it wouldn't
let me do things like share the Program Files directory (nor the WNNT one
either) so some misc support functions that I could have done for all three
machines from one chair and keyboard I couldn't do to it except from its keyboard.
I've never used an XP Pro machine so I don't know whether this was just the
Home edition. Third was that it would not automatically reconnect a mapped drive
on either of the other machines if they had been re-booted. I forget all of
the other headaches it was but I finally blew it away and brought it up with
W2K.
