Jim,
I've used Norton products in the past, with mixed results.
Norton System utilities (if you have more then one hard
drive) has been known for "Hiding" & (quote-unquote)
"Locking" secondary hard drives, occasionally leading to
Windows' "Blue screen of death."
It essentially boils down to personal preference. BUT if
you truly want to keep your computer safe, working well &
virus-free, consider the following, most of which is FREE.
Antivirus: (Free) AVG 7.296 at
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 then scroll
down to the link,
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg70free_296a409.exe
OR Antivir at http://www.free-av.com/
For firewalls there's the ever-popular (free or paid) Zone
Alarm at http://www.zonelabs.com or Sygate Personal
Firewall (Free) at http://www.sygate.com/firewall/
A highly recommended must for windows users, (especially
XP) is the free downloads at
http://www.grc.com/freepopular.htm
As for utilities, a good (better then Norton IMHO)
utilities suite can be found at
http://www.v-com.com/product/SystemSuite_Home.html which
used to be known as "Kroll-Ontrack"
I have, and still use all of the above on my personal
"testbed" machines with excellent results. :-)
Hope this helps
