Here's the situation. I've been using my computer for recording practice
sessions with the guitar etc. I have discovered that the .WAV recordings
get what appear to be totally random "thumps and bumps" in the recording.
These are low frequency, but very noticeable "thumps", especially if I
play back with any bass boost at all in the stereo system (or have the
computer Subwoofer on). This precludes doing any low frequency
equalization that enhances the low frequencies, in fact I have to cut the
lows below about 150 Hz to help it out.

I DON'T expect professional studio quality recordings out of my practice
sessions, but it should be able to do better than this.

Here's the Setup.

Computer: 600 MHz Pentium 3 with 256kMB Ram, 2 10GB HDDs, running
Win98SE and all upgrades. Video Card Premium Nvidia with 64MB dedicated
ram.
Soundcard: Soundblaster AWE 64 Gold. (I'm not using Wave tables).
Mic, Cheap computer type Electret. BUT, it's NOT MIC related as a silent
recording made with no microphone or sound source connected produces the
same random thumps. So it's not me bumping the mic.

Software for recording: Nero Wave Editor OR Audacity.

Could the computer's randomly accessing the hard drive while recording
produce these "bumps"?
