Prior to August 19 I had my setting for Win XP Automatic Updates checked for the Microsoft recommended default that allows automatic downloads and installation.
On August 19 I changed by setting for WinXP Automatic Updates to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them."
Some of you will not be surprised to learn that on late on August 21 I saw the SP2 download hit me, regardless of my settings. I can only assume that either the "Notify me..." does not mean what it says, or Microsoft polled my machine prior to August 19, and on August 21 sent me what my settings were three days earlier.
The download took significant time on DSL since I don't have a T3 line. Dial up folks may have problems galore.
I know that it is WinXP SP2 because the license agreement is the first thing I see in the "Install" routine. I clicked "Cancel" to exit. It did not install, of course, because until I accept the license agreement nothing moves forward.
Today I learned from McAfee that their document 355593 is available and is entitled, "How do I install McAfee programs with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)?"
Most of my other "advisors" say don't install now, inasmuch as already two serious holes have been found, one each in SP2 and MIExplorer.
Ain't it great!
