This is a Compaq 1210 laptop: Intell 150 Mhz Pentium, 32 meg of RAM, 1.4 Gig
hard drive, 14X CD ROM drive, 16 bitt ESS stereo sound card, 33.6 K data/fax
modem, 1.44 meg 3.5 drive and Windows 95a. Never had a problem with it since I
bought it new.
I installed Mcafee Virus Scan version 5.13 from CD without any problems. This is
my registered copy. Phone line has no special features; caller id, call waiting
etc. It needed to download 172 files from the Mcafee web site to complete the
installation. I started the download.
I checked on it every fifteen minutes to see how it was doing. All went well for
just under one hour, somewhere after 90 files had been downloaded, I got a
message telling me that the program had performed an illegal function and would
be shut down. I shut it all down.
I checked and none of the downloaded files were in the Mcafee directory.
I started all over again. All went well for just under one hour. this time it
was past 110 files when the same error message appeared.
I was still connected to my ISP.
The next time I booted it up, the set up menu apeared and it started in 'safe'
mode. I knew then I was in trouble. I shut down from the Win 95a main screen.
Booted into DOS with my trusty back up disk.
I manually killed the Mcafee directory, and all sub directories. Did a hard
drive search and removed all other related files, such as the desk top icon etc.
I restarted the computer and all was back to normal. I went into the 'control
panel' and checked to see if Mcafee was still showing in the system. It was not.
Now my question: I use this program on two other computers; both Compaq, a 233
Mhz and a 450 Mhz machine. Windows 95b and Windows 98a. It works just fine.
Previously I was running the version 3.0 on the lap top, but decided I needed to
upgrade to a more current program for better virus protection. I used the
uninstall software Mcafee includes with the Virus Scan program. It worked fine.
I checked the system to be sure of that. yes, including the system.ini and
win.ini and registry. It was totally gone.
Question: Why am I getting the error message at about the one hour point when
trying to download the needed files from the Mcafee web site? Remember, when it
failed, it had downloaded about twenty more files the second time than the
first.
Thank you for your collective wisdom on the resolution of this puzzle.
