FWIW Dell (and others) ship their XP-based machines with
house-branded "viewers" and other utilities that manage things 
like photos and other imported files in a way that  *they*  think 
you might want them to be managed.

You might want to consider downloading one of the excellent
image management tools available, then crippling whatever
was shipped on your particular computer to eliminate the
problem of "renamed" files in the future.
