[Ham-Computers] Netscape

Folks,

First off, most of the services like MSN and AOL use proprietary
interfaces to access the servers. This is the typical "fat client"
approach whereby a Win32/MacOS binary runs on the desktop that provides
the necessary access to services such as e-mail etc. Both AOL and MSN
provide access to there services WITHOUT having to use the fat client
approach. Generally, access to these services such as e-mail is web based.
MSN provides access to your MSN account via the internet much like you
do when you visit yahoo. I believe this is a cheaper option that using
their dial-ip infrastructure however you must have your own access to the
internet. Now on to the issue of Internet Expolder vis a vis Netscape.
Given that MSN customizes the "experience" as they call it of MSN to IE
I doubt you will have all the features on Netscape. Remember, Microsoft
has trashed every standard they have gotten their fingers on to FORCE
you to stay on their technology. The "web" was designed to provide open
access to data from ANY desktop to ANY server and Uncle Willie and his
team has tried to make it very difficult for those (like your self) who
want choice.

Look at the following statement straight off the MSN home page:

Details of Two Month Free MSN 8 Internet Software plan:
Internet access service is not provided; you must have existing Internet
Access service. MSN 8 Internet Software is for users of the Windows 98 or
later operating systems only. You must additionally subscribe to MSN 8
Internet Software in accordance with its Subscription Agreement to access
the software. MSN 8 Internet Software is only available to residents of the
50 United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. A major credit
card is required. Following your trial period, the then-current price for
the standard monthly MSN 8 Internet Software plan will be automatically
charged to your credit card until you cancel your subscription or select an
alternative plan. MSN is available only for personal non-commercial use. May
not be combined with any other Microsoft offers or rebates. Prices subject
to change. Promotion expires January 31, 2003.

If I wanted to run a Linux desktop and use mozilla I, according to the above
agreement, would not be allowed to access MSN.

They short answer is get another ISP and change your e-mail account.
Shoot I have 11 servers running in the shack. I'll alias you e-mail
account for you from MSN to an OPEN IMAP/POP server so you can run
Netscape or whatever you like for free.

I've tried that one, and that's not it. No, you can't see the address -
microsft won't reveal what they have fiddled it to!
