While I agree Windoesn't is a real dud, I've been, for compatibilty
with my wife's office, running "Lose 98" on one of my computers for over a
year with no un-expected lockups, having to boot every day (??!!), or
re-install anything.
The single most important trick is to do a custom install, and
leave out anything and everything you aren't going to use. And, when once
installed, delete any ISP offers that show up on the desktop, and go
a'hunting thru the files and kill any associated fragments you can find.
And then defrag. Also, avoid installing random music files, specialty s/w,
nifty screensavers, etc.: you may have a duller computer, but it will
actually work!
Sounds like at this point, you're too far gone. BTW, DON'T (and I
can't stress that enough) re-format using the previous "OS" boot floppy: it
will leave fragments of the old formatting, being unable to determine
whether any of it is faulty (which, since we're talking about a Gate's
abortion here, is pretty much a given!) Use a mid-level BIOS format
instead (best), or, if it will let you, which it probably won't, DOS 6.22
or the like; or, re-format using OS/2 or something wildly different from
Windud, then format AGAIN with your final offer.
I can't resist: if you knew SuSE, like I knew SuSE, oh, oh, what a ...
Failing the above, I have a sledgehammer handy ... e
