[Ham-Computers] RE: Dialup "save password" greyed out

Goran,

This is often caused by a corrupted password list. Win9x saves your
passwords in a .PWL file (PassWord List). If Windows can't read the .PWL
file properly, it may also prevent you from trying to write to it (as in
saving a password).

In the C:\WINDOWS directory, you'll find a .PWL file for every name that was
used to login to Windows. Just delete these .PWL files, reboot, and Windows
will create a new .PWL files. The first time you start Windows after
deleting the .PWL files, it will prompt you to enter a username and
password. If you're a home user (not on a business network), enter anything
you want as the name and leave the password *blank*. It will ask you to
confirm the blank password. If "Windows Logon" is selected in the Network
Control Panel, then Windows will from then on "autologon" using the name you
entered each time you start Windows since the password is blank. If you
have "Microsoft Windows Network" or some other client (such as Netware
Client) selected as the default network in the control panel, then Windows
will always prompt for a Username and password. The .PWL files are where
the passwords are stored.

To be safe, instead of deleting the .PWL files, rename them to .PW_ or some
other extension. Or, just move the files to a different directory. Also,
any programs you've used that stored passwords may prompt for new passwords
as they may have saved them in the .PWL file.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] Dialup "save password" greyed out

Hi,
I am setting up a computer (window 95) for future
Ham-vaccations guests. I would like to save the
password for the dial in connection so that the
guests do not have to key it in. The box I have
to mark to save the password when dialing my
provider is greyed out and will not accept saving
the password.

Any ideas how I can get the "save password" to work?
