I am quite sure its plating. My memory is not clear of what
they looked like new but I think it was "satin chrome" not bright
chrome. The ringed knobs I have all show signs of worn plating. I
think it must have been pretty thin because its very hard
(impossible for me) to find any in pristine condition.
Hallicrafters seems to have discontinued the rings at some
point, perhaps during the Korean war. They were not used on the
S-38 after the B or on the S-40B. We forget that many of the war
time material restrictions of WW-2 were reinstated during the
Korean war. There was also serious inflation without the economic
regulations of WW-2. Strange time.
