[Hallicrafters] SX-28A main tuning question

I think I am missing something on the main tuning concentric shafts. The
knob just spins and does not move the tuneable caps. When I received there
was a small brass ¼” piece of brass fastened to the end of the center shaft
with a sheet metal screw. Since I have never restored one of these, I do not
know how it should be constructed. Either the shaft was broken off and the
owner did this quick fix or the screw that holds the ¼” piece was broken and
they chose a sheet metal screw. The inside of the center shaft seems to have
threads and they may be 2/56 but they are so buggered from sheet metal screw
that I cannot get a 2/56 started. Can someone tell me how this should be
constructed. Doug Moore’s article has a photo of the shaft but it is not
clear enough to answer the questions. The back side of the shaft has the
proper pressure washer and shim against the flywheel.
